Magnetic Polymers & Surfactants
Organic magnetic materials are part of intensive research. Our aim concerns the synthesis, analysis and optimization of materials combining magnetic properties with the advantage of organic materials which are lighter, more flexible and cheaper in fabrication than conventional materials. Modern applications are magneto optical switching, organic memories and spintronics. A second focus is the investigation of two-, or three dimensional assemblies of paramagnetic (d-metal or lanthanide-based) surfactants to exploit novel forms of collective magnetism.1, 2 This allows for new methods in separation techniques, catalysis and magnetophoretic applications. We use vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and electron spin resonance (ESR) to analyze the magnetic properties. We use dynamic light scattering (DLS) for size characteristics. In collaboration with AK Meerholz, these properties are correlated with optical (UV-vis; Fluorescence), thermal (TGA; DSC) and electrochemical (CV) properties and potential applications in electronic devices (OFET) are investigated.
